The Spirit Of Adventure

Hello!
Can you smell it? That smell of warmer weather, and the feeling that summer is just around the corner! And with warmer weather comes the prospect of hot sunny days, and many more adventures.

When it comes to the seasons, I do some creative accounting. As you know, there are different ways to determine the start end end of each season. I mostly go by meteorological seasons, which dictate that summer starts on the 1st of June. However, when it comes to the end of summer, I'm more than willing to switch to astronomical seasons, as that means summer only ends some three weeks into September!

Stretching summer is important, as summer is the main adventure season. I'm just waiting for a forecast spell of dry, sunny weather, then I'll be heading off to cycle the newly revised version of my Brighton Bimble route - I'll keep you updated about that route.

Also, while meteorological seasons (which most scientists use) dictate that spring starts on the 1st of March, for me spring starts when I spot the first snowdrops blooming! That conveniently shrinks winter in my head.

What about you? Do you use similar creative accounting tricks to help you through your least favourite season? And what summer adventures do you have planned?

May all the rides you go on be free of horse-flies!

The Good News

You probably heard that the word is facing a huge problem, in the shape of drug-resistant bacteria. That's a big part of the reason why you must complete a full course of antibiotics, once started.
In a very welcome breakthrough, scientists have discovered a new class of antibiotics that are effective against drug-resistant bacteria!

Did You Know...?

While climate change deniers bemoan the cost of decarbonising the world, NOT decarbonising will be far more expensive (just in monetary terms, and ignoring the cost in lives).

And they called it puppy love

I have a new love in my life: he's called Alfie, and he's the most adorable ball of fluff I've seen in a while. Alfie's a Shih Zu puppy, though I'm convinced there's another breed in there somewhere, too. I'm not a Kennel Club snob, and while I have nothing against "pure breed" dogs, I don't care about that at …

Why do you ride?

When I got back into cycling, it was because my kids - still little at the time - wanted to go riding further than just up and down the pavement in front of the house where we used to live. As a result, I got a really cheap mountain bike, which I absolutely loved! That led to me starting cycle …
