Description
This route guide covers the Kennet and Avon Canal cycle route, which follows National Cycle Network route 4 (NCN 4). As such, there are significant parts where the route doesn’t follow the towpath, but instead sticks to quiet rural lanes that criss-crosses the canal, to avoid segments where the towpath is in such poor condition that cycling it isn’t feasible.
It is a stunning route, with plenty of pubs along the way. You will want a bike with chunky tyres – this is not a route for road bikes. Ideally, you want a good hybrid, gravel or adventure bike, or perhaps a mountain bike. Expect mud along the way – that’s an inescapable part of towpath cycling.
