The Spirit Of Adventure

Hi there!

Since my last newsletter, I went cycling from Penzance to Plymouth, over three days, wild camping along the way. It was gorgeous! And hard work. I won't fill the newsletter with details of the ride, as I posted the write-up on WillCycle already.
Sadly, that was most probably my last long(ish) ride this year, as autumn's in full swing and it won't be long before it's winter.

Having said that, I am planning on still going on cycling adventures right through winter, but they'll only be wild camping for a single night. One of those will be a hiking adventure. My mate Caspar and I will be hiking and camping on Dartmoor in October, leaving our bikes behind for a change.

How about you? Will you be cycling outside right through winter, or will your bike go into the shed, not to see daylight again until spring? Have you considered some winter adventures? Do let us know!

I'm working on a treasure-hunt type of game, called ReliQuest. This will involve hiding 4 objects (OK, they're WillCycle coffee coasters, if you want to know) all over the UK. One will be in Scotland, one in Wales, and the last two in England.
To find them, players will need to solve a series of clues. Each clue correctly answered will reveal the next clue, with the final clue (when solved) revealing the location of each item.
The 1st person to find a coaster will win a WillCycle cycling jersey.

Why am I telling you this now? Simple - I'm going to need some help hiding the coasters. If you're interested in helping (which would exclude you from playing the game, obviously) I'd be delighted!

May all the overtakes you receive be safe and wide.

The Blast From The Past button is quite straightforward: with every edition, I link a random old WillCycle post to it. If you click it, you will see what old WillCycle post it takes you to.
The button will only ever point at WillCycle.

The Good News

Feeling stressed out? Increasing numbers of people are, but scientists have found that spending just 60 minutes in a green, rural environment can dramatically decrease your stress levels.

Did You Know...?

NASA discovered 2 new "temperate rocky" planets, which may (or may not!) be able to sustain life.
It's all academic, of course, as they're over 100 lightyears away, but I love that the star one of the planets orbits is called Speculoos-2.
Speculoos is the name of the biscuits available in the UK as Bischoff Lotus biscuits, and they're my absolute favourite!

Cuckoo Trail

Cuckoo Trail
14 miles of traffic-free bliss in East Sussex The Cuckoo Trail runs from Heathfield to Polegate, passing through Hellingly, Horam, and Hailsham. The trail got its name from an old tradition of releasing a cuckoo at the Heathfield Fair. This is a disused railway, and so is mainly flat, with gentle gradients. It forms part of NCN 21. Will's Unexpected Bike Hack

We've all had to do an unexpected shop on the way home, and sometimes you don't have your panniers on the bike, so how do you carry shopping home? I'm sure that you too have done the dangling bags from the handlebars thing, but that affects the bike's handling (at best) and is quite unstable.
If you don't have one with you, buy a sturdy bag for life. When at your bike, fold the carry handle over the rack, and back out again, so it's looped right around the tube of the rack. Next, use a sturdy stick, a screw-driver, or anything similar, and push it through the emerging loop of the carry handle. Ensure the loop is between the two points where the carry handle is attached to the bag. The stick will prevent the shopping bag's handle from unwinding around the rack tube, and you'll have an impromptu pannier.
Just ride slow, as you don't want shopping to bounce out!
