The Spirit Of Adventure

Hello again!

Caspar and I went hiking on Dartmoor, visiting a Bronze Age village, called Erme Pound. You can read all about that at the other end of this link.

Here in the UK the clocks are changing this weekend, meaning as from Sunday, where I live, the sun will set before 5pm, and obviously getting earlier every day.

I was born in November, which makes me a spring baby (I was born in South Africa) and I don't think I'll ever adjust to having my birthday in autumn. Spring and summer remain my most favourite seasons, by a massive margin.
Oddly enough, it's not the cold that gets to me, but the grey wetness. Where I grew up, near the Botswana border, winter skies were almost always clear blue. I don't believe I suffer from SAD (Seasonal Affected Disorder) though I suppose there might be a hint of that.

To combat any autumn and winter blues, I fully intend to continue to have adventures, and that includes camping out at least once per month. I'm hoping we'll have snow on Dartmoor this winter, so I can go snow-camping. However, with climate change raging on, it's becoming increasingly unlikely that Dartmoor will have anything but the occasional very light dusting of snow.

And speaking of climate change, I'm still reeling from British Cycling's decision to accept sponsorship from Shell! Read the room, people!

May all the trains you want to travel on always have a free bike space!

The Good News

Vultures were wiped out in Bulgaria over 60 years ago. However, over the past seven years, an EU-funded project re-introduced 70 vultures back into the wild. By all reports, the outcome of this project has been very successful.

Did You Know...?

For centuries, willow bark has been used as a pain killer. The active ingredient in the bark, salicyl, turns into salicylic acid, which is a pain killer of similar strength to aspirin (but easier on the stomach).

WillCycle on the Fediverse

The fedi-what?? As I'm writing this, Twitter seems to be on fire and in freefall. Though I've little time for Twitter's new owner, Elon Musk, I'm also not happy at him apparently destroying Twitter as we're watching. Still, I have a strategy in life that's served me very well so far: control what you can, and don't worry about the …

Will's Unexpected Bike Hack

When cycle touring, two items you should definitely consider taking along are cable ties and duct tape. Cable ties can do amazing emergency repairs, while duct tape can even be used to patch up a torn pannier.

Do you have any hacks to share? Well then, don't be shy! Simply reply to this email. I'm fast running out of useful hacks to share so I can really do with suggestions.
