The Spirit Of Adventure

Hello again!

Dark, dreary days are here for the next several months, but a great counter for that is to start planning your summer adventures!

In my case, I'm cycling the bottom 700 miles of the Wild Atlantic Way in Ireland, and I cannot wait!

In summer '23 I'm also ramping up my WeCycle guided wild camping experiences. They're the perfect introduction to wild camping, designed for those who always wanted to go wild camping, but couldn't do so on their own.
Combining gravel cycling, wild swimming, and camping under a stunning Dartmoor sky, all possible as a car-free adventure! What's not to love?

What about you - what strategies do you employ for helping you though the winter?

In other news, by the time you receive this newsletter, it'll almost be my birthday, and I'd very much like a present from you. Please will you plant a tree for me?

I don't care what kind of tree, as long as you plant a tree. This is the only thing I ask for my birthday, and for years now I've been asking people for the same thing. Just remember, with planting a tree comes the responsibility to nurture it, and look after it.

Now because it's my birthday, I have a gift for one of you: a WillCycle cycling jersey! I only have two left, so I'm afraid you can't pick and choose sizes. I have 1 medium and 1 large. Oh, and the only colour available is blue.
Provided you're happy with those limited choices, all you need to do to enter the giveaway is reply to this newsletter. The winner will be picked at random, and announced in the next newsletter.

Also, if you follow me on Twitter, I'm hedging my bets, in case Musk completely ruins Twitter (which is looking increasingly likely). As a result, I created a personal account, and a WillCycle account on Mastodon. If you're on Mastodon, please give me a follow?
I'm @WilliamNB@toot.bike and @WillCycle@mastodon.online.

If you're not on Mastodon yet, what are you still waiting for? This explainer may make it far easier for you to join.

May all the trains you want to travel on always have a free bike space!

The Blast From The Past button is quite straightforward: with every edition, I link a random old WillCycle post to it. If you click it, you will see what old WillCycle post it takes you to.
The button will only ever point at WillCycle.

The Good News

Ever stepped on an ant and thought nothing of it? Well, scientists found that ants may be even better that pesticides at protecting crops, all without the nasty, poisonous side-effects.

Did You Know...?

Raw green beans have surprisingly good anti-inflammatory effects. As with all food though, moderation is key.
People on blood-thinners should consider medical advice first, as green beans are also rich in Vitamin K (amongst others) and Vitamin K impacts on blood clotting.

Taunton & Bridgwater canal

The Taunton & Bridgwater Canal is a 14 mile, mostly traffic-free cycling route. As you'd expect from a canal route, it's very flat. Surface The route surface is tarred in places and quite good, while it others it has a self-compacting gravel surface. The gravel surface is good to ride on, but after rain you will undoubtedly benefit from having …

Whitehaven Rowrah Cycle Trail

Built along the route of the Whitehaven, Cleator & Egremont and Rowrah & Kelton Fell Railways, this 11 mile route is traffic-free along most of its length. I started the route as shown on the map below by the Whitehaven train station and it ends at the café at Cumbria Kart Racing Club. Surface The route is mostly tarred, but …

Will's Unexpected Bike Hack

Before cycle touring abroad, photocopy your passport, laminate that copy, then roll it up and stash it inside your bike's handlebars.
That way, should you get robbed, and your passport is stolen, it will make it MUCH easier to get an emergency passport issued. Obviously, that's in addition to taking photos of your passport (and any visas).

Do you have any hacks to share? Well then, don't be shy! Simply reply to this email. I'm fast running out of useful hacks to share so I can really do with suggestions.

And Finally...

I spend considerable amounts of time producing The Spirit Of Adventure, and you receive it for free. Please do me a favour and forward it to someone else who you think will appreciate it?
