The Spirit Of Adventure

Hello there, all you hopeless romantics!

By the time you read this, it will be just over a week before Valentine's Day. I'm NOT into commercialisation and abhor the never-ending marketing hype, so I certainly won't tell you to go buy all sorts of tat, supposedly in the name of love.

Instead, I have a different suggestion: if there's someone special in your life, take them on a bike ride and a picnic. Yes, in February! Yes, even in the UK! It doesn't have to be a big bike ride. If you can, take panniers, with a hot flask of coffee, tea, hot chocolate, or similar, and consider taking a warm meal in a soup vacuum flask.
Whatever you do, just step out of your comfort zone, even if you have to hook up an umbrella under a tree, to shelter from the rain for a bit.

Unrelated, to shake things up a bit - in a future edition of The Spirit Of Adventure, I'm planning on doing a Q&A session. For that to work, YOU need to ask me questions. Simply reply to this email with whatever question you may have.
I'm also toying with some ideas about changing the format of the newsletter. Watch this space!

May all the trains you want to travel on always have a free bike space!

The Blast From The Past button is quite straightforward: with every edition, I link a random old WillCycle post to it. If you click it, you will see what old WillCycle post it takes you to.
The button will only ever point at WillCycle.

The Good News

We all know that leading a sedentary life is very unhealthy, but what do you do if your job is office-based, and requires you to sit at a desk all day?
Recent research found there's a simple way to counter the harm sitting all day can do, and it's easier than you think.

Did You Know...?

You can experience what NASA's Juno spacecraft recorded, pretty much along any part of Juno's flight. You will need an app from NASA to view it, though. More details here.

When AI writes about cycle touring

ChatGPT ChatGPT is an Artificial Intelligence (AI) bot that's received a great deal of publicity lately. Currently in free preview, practically anyone can go ask it anything. Be warned though: the responses aren't always correct. Amongst other things, ChatGPT told me that the Silkin Way was in South Wales! There's significant concern in academic circles about students using tools like …

Getting cold feet

Getting cold feet
The Cambridge Dictionary defines "getting cold feet" as "to suddenly become too frightened to do something you had planned to do, especially something important such as getting married". This post is not about that kind of cold feet. This post is all about keeping your feet warm on a bitterly cold winter's ride. After all, just because it's winter doesn't …

Random Internet Link

This edition's website is both fascinating, and creepy. The site is called This Person Does Not Exist, and that's entirely accurate. Every time you refresh the page, a new person's face will appear on-screen. Every such person was generated by an AI, and there are NO photos of actual human beings on that site!

Will's Unexpected Bike Hack

In the last edition, I gave one tip for people who may not have access to a garden, or similar, and who need to wash their bikes. Here's the second tip to do that:
Next time you're in a garden centre, or in the gardening isle at your local superstore, pick up one of those pressure-sprayers that's often used to spray either plant food, or herbicide. You can fill them with water, pump them up to gain internal pressure, then wash your bike almost anywhere.

Do you have any hacks to share? Well then, don't be shy! Simply reply to this email. I'm just about out of useful hacks to share so I can really do with suggestions.
C'mon - surely you must have 1 or 2 handy little tricks to share?

I spend considerable amounts of time producing The Spirit Of Adventure, and you receive it for free. Please do me a favour and forward it to someone else who you think will appreciate it?
