Merry Christmas!

The Spirit Of Adventure

Merry Christmas to you and yours!

I'm not at all a fan of what Christmas has become - essentially a festival of gluttony and greed - but I am a big fan of giving.

With that in mind, I'm going to ask you a favour: please ensure you carry physical money when out and about, and if you can, please buy a Big Issue from a street vendor?
Don't just hand over your cash and scuttle away though. Why not strike up a conversation with the vendor? Ask them how they came to be selling the Big Issue, and if you can, offer them a hot drink. When you do finally walk away, both you and that vendor will feel warm inside, but perhaps for different reasons.

I'll be giving something away, too: One lucky person will receive a Beer Ride cycling cap. To enter the draw, simply reply to this email and tell me what your Festive Season cycling plans are. As ever, I'll use the random online picker to select a winner from the list of people who entered.

We're also fast approaching the end of the year, so tell us what your New Year's Resolutions are. Maybe it's to cycle a certain distance overall in 2023? Perhaps you'll be Everesting a local climb? Perhaps you're recovering from injury, and you're just aiming to be able to cycle 5 miles again?

May all your Christmas wishes come true!

The Blast From The Past button is quite straightforward: with every edition, I link a random old WillCycle post to it. If you click it, you will see what old WillCycle post it takes you to.
The button will only ever point at WillCycle.

The Good News

We all would like nature to recover and thrive more, but at the same time, rely on it to meet our needs. In India, for over 200 years they've been growing the world's most sustainable bridges. These living bridges even grow stronger with time!

Did You Know...?

We've all read science-fiction book and seen SciFi films where they talk about wormholes, right?
Wormholes are a quantum physics phenomenon theorised about first by Einstein, then many others. And now we know they're real! How? Because scientists created one!
Fair warning, this is complex reading.

The Rail-Hike-Camp map

A map aimed at hikers? Well yeah, the Rail-Hike-Camp map was created specifically with hikers in mind. The idea is simple: a map showing camp sites within a day's hike from a train station. Obviously, that allows hikers to greatly expand where they go adventuring, by using trains. The benefit to cycle tourers The Rail-Hike-Camp map has value to people …

So this is Christmas...

So this is Christmas...
and what have you done? Another year over, and a new one just begun. Those are the opening lines of my all-time, most-favourite Christmas song, Happy Xmas (War Is Over), by John Lennon. Around this time of year I always do a Christmas roundup post. More of a friendly chat with friends, really, and I hope you will read it …

Will's Unexpected Bike Hack

If ever you're caught out cycling at night and your rear light stopped working, you're in a bit of a pickle. To be legal, the law states your rear light must be red, so this hack isn't legal. However, it will help you be seen. Simply turn your phone's torch on and stick it in your cycling jersey or cycling raincoat's rear pocket, with the screen towards your body and the torch shining behind you.
It's not perfect, but will give you a rear light of some sort. One night, this helped me get home.

Do you have any hacks to share? Well then, don't be shy! Simply reply to this email. I'm fast running out of useful hacks to share so I can really do with suggestions.
