The Spirit Of Adventure

Hello again!

When it comes to seasons, summer is by a massive margin my favourite, followed by spring, then autumn. Winter comes in at a very distant last place. While we had an amazing late spring on the British Isles (I got sunburned, in Ireland, in May!) most of summer wasn't exactly brilliant.
In fact, the weather caused me to postpone my planned North Devon ride twice.

I mostly go by meteorological seasons, which means that autumn starts on the 1st of September - just a week after this newsletter was sent out. In years gone by, I used to limit my adventures to anywhere from late spring, to very early autumn.
However, that's changed, and these days I'll go cycle camping even in the depth of winter. Thinking of winter as just a different adventure season makes it a bit more bearable to me.

How about you? Which is your favourite season, and what mind-tricks do you use to help you get through your least-favourite season?

In other news, I'll be closing down my web shop soon. All cycling caps are marked down, and when the dwindling current stock is sold out, I'll close the shop. Yes, that means I'll stop selling T-shirts, too. All T-shirts are currently marked down to £20 each, though that's only till the end of August.

I'll continue to sell my GoCycle route guides, but instead of a full ecommerce component (which slows the site down a fair bit) it will be via PayPal buttons.

You probably noticed that I haven't published any new content to the site for the past two weeks. I've not been lazy - I was moving web hosts, and that was the priority. Normal service will be resued soon.

May all the trains you want to travel on always have a free bike space!

The Blast From The Past button is quite straightforward: with every edition, I link a random old WillCycle post to it. If you click it, you will see what old WillCycle post it takes you to.
The button will only ever point at WillCycle.

The Good News

During Bolsonara era, Brazil suffered devastating losses of the Amazon rainforest, but the fightback is going strong, and forest invaders are being driven out.

Did You Know...?

John Starley built the Rover Safety Bicycle - the forefather of all bicycles that followed the Penny Farthing. After his death, his company, the Rover Cycle Company Ltd, started manufacturing first motorcycles, then cars.
Eventually, it would go on to become the behemoth that cursed this world with the monstrosities they call Range Rovers.

Kit Review - Profile Design aero bars & risers

Overall rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Aero bars on a touring bike? Yes, I fit Profile Design Legacy II aero bars to my touring bike. My primary motivation was not to gain any aerodynamical improvements. No, instead I wanted a way to get weight off my hands and wrists, especially on longer rides. I intentionally left it some time before doing a review, …

Kit Review - Nebo Mycro head torch

Kit review of the Nebo Mycro head torch.
Overall rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Head torches are severely under-rated, and are critical bits of kit. They come in extremely useful when cycle commuting, cycle touring and when camping. On night-time rides, riders who use battery lights are usually able to remove their lights to illuminate parts of their bike, for example when mending a puncture. Us lot who ride with dynamo …

Bluegrass music forms the bedrock of so very much of music around today. Rock giants Nirvana has hits that were cover versions of bluegrass songs, for instance. Most bluegrass dates from well before the digital age, and you cannot find it to buy anywhere.
Fortunately, a group of volunteers started building an archive of various old recordings that they digitised, so go have a look around!
