The Spirit Of Adventure

Hello again!

Time to try something new here. Everyone's familiar with Agony Aunty type columns, and from the next edition, I will be running an Agony Uncle column. With a twist!

If you're looking for advice about your broken heart, I'm afraid my advice will probably simply be to go for a bike ride. Sorry about that (but really, going for a bike ride will make you feel better).

However, I might be able to help with questions about cycle touring, camping gear, and similar. Even better, there's a whole bunch of highly knowledgeable people amongst you, and if I can't personally answer the question, I'll post it here (names will be changed to protect the innocent, unless you explicitly tell me it's OK to use your real details) and we'll ask everyone out there for advice.
But (and you knew there was a "but" coming, didn't you?) this will only work if YOU write in with questions. I'm hoping to be inundated with questions, so don't leave me hanging, OK?

May your raincoat always be within quick and easy reach, at the top of your panniers.

The Blast From The Past button is quite straightforward: with every edition, I link a random old WillCycle post to it. If you click it, you will see what old WillCycle post it takes you to.
The button will only ever point at WillCycle.

The Good News

That dreaded dentist visit may in the future prove to be almost unnecessary. Why go to the dentist when you can simply grow a new tooth? A drug that may allow adults to grow new teeth has just entered clinical trials in Japan.

Did You Know...?

Love garlic, but avoiding it because you don't want to have garlic breath?
There's a simple, and highly-effective cure: after garlic, eat some whole-milk plain yoghurt, as that's been proven to reduce 99% of the major odour-producing garlic volatiles.
Not very helpful if your vegan though, but lettuce, apples and mint are also proven to reduce the odour-producing volatiles.

What Did You Miss On WillCycle?

Who wants to be a smelly tramp?

There's an inescapable reality about cycle touring and wild camping: there's no on-suite bathroom with built-in shower. Personal hygiene is important at any time, but certainly comes to the fore when cycle touring and wild camping. Having said that, there are many things you can do to maintain personal hygiene. Wipes or flannels to the rescue Most wet wipes are …

Climbing the Colombier - Part 2

Climbing the Colombier - Part 2
This is the 2nd part of Roy Everitt's guest posts about cycling up the Grand Colombier in France, on a laden touring bike. If you missed it, Part 1 is here. Day 2 – To Lyon I slept okay but awoke early again, and went for a stroll to find a patisserie for breakfast pastries and a baguette. I had …

Random Internet Link

This site is a bit tricky to explain in just a sentence or two. Called the Evolution Of Trust, it offers some simulations of games based around trust, and uncovers often-uncomfortable elements of the human psyche. Visit the link, and spend some time. It will be 5 or 10 minutes that were extremely well spent!

And Finally...

I spend considerable amounts of time producing The Spirit Of Adventure, and you receive it for free. Please do me a favour and forward it to someone else who you think will appreciate it?
