The Spirit Of Adventure

Hi there!

This is the 52nd edition of the Spirit Of Adventure - yes, it's been going for a year already - and I want to thank you for having been along for the ride! An especially big thank you goes out to those of you who signed up right from the start, when the newsletter had a different name.

Out every 2 weeks, it's actually been just over a year already. That's because I once messed up with the dates, and one edition was sent out a week late. From that date, I simply maintained the 2-week gap between newsletters, and here we are, one year and one week later.

The newsletter has shown steady growth over the past year. It has consistently averaged double the industry standard for reading of newsletters, which tells me you enjoy reading it, and that pleases me.
As ever, if you enjoy reading it, then consider your friends may also enjoy reading it, so why don't you forward it to them?

Valentine's Day is just a few days away, and we're nearing the end of winter. What romantic, cycling-related gestures will you get up to for Valentine's? And what winter-cycling adventures have you done, or are planning on doing? Go on - tell us all about it!

May the person you love feel exactly the same way about you!
Will

The Blast From The Past button is quite straightforward: with every edition, I link a random old WillCycle post to it. If you click it, you will see what old WillCycle post it takes you to.
The button will only ever point at WillCycle.

The Good News

As from January '24, Paris is implementing far higher parking rates for SUVs. The growth in the SUV market more than wiped out CO2 emissions reductions made by the car industry, and Paris is leading the charge to price such behemoths out of existence.

This Road I Ride - Juliana Buhring

In this world, very few people truly get to be trailblazers. Juliana Buhring is one of those few people. This Road I Ride tells the story of Buhring's record-breaking round-the-world bike ride. If you're a man, you may not like me saying this, but Buhring is an exceptionally tough person - likely far tougher than what you or me could …

Next adventures

Next adventures
We can't all be on adventures all the time. Even the world's most persistent cycle tourer, Heinz Stücke, eventually settled down. However, what we can do is start planning our next adventures! Decide on a timescale Time is the greatest limiter. You can always get more money, but you can never get more time. Your time is the most valuable …

WillCycle Supporter

WillCycle is mostly funded by me, with ad income almost covering the web hosting costs. I get that most of us don't like ads, and browse the Internet with an ad-blocker. However, because WillCycle is so reliant on ad-revenue, I was forced to block people visiting the site with ad-blockers running.
If you really wanted an ad-free experience on WillCycle, you can sign up as a WillCycle Supporter.

Spanner In The Spokes

The idea behind Spanner In The Spokes is simple: send me your questions about bicycles, cycle touring and camping, and I'll either answer them, or ask others to answer them. Keep sending those questions!

Here's this edition's question: Are 1x crank sets worth it?

That's something you will need to decide for yourself, I'm afraid. Some people swear by them, while others criticise them.
I don't personally see the point. Sure, it simplifies things at the front, and with mechanical things, simpler translates as fewer things to go wrong. However, it's a trade-off for which you sacrifice much gearing range.
On my bike, I actually went from a double chainring to a triple, to give me a far bigger range of gears, but then mine's a touring bike.
