The Chester Millennium Greenway is a 9.1 mile almost completely traffic-free cycle route, built mainly on a disused railway line. As the name suggests, it runs right through the heart of Chester.
Because it’s built on a disused railway, the route can feel very disconnected from its surroundings, and even in Chester can feel surprisingly rural. The downside to this is there are no cafés directly on the route, save for the two at the start and end.

Surface on the Chester Millennium Greenway
The surface is fairly smooth tar throughout.
Refreshments
Your options are fairly limited: There’s Meadow Lea Farm Coffee Shop, and Yvonne’s Cafe, in Connah’s Quay, at the far end.
Bikes
Any kind of bike can use the Chester Millennium Greenway. That includes tandems, trikes and cargo bikes.
Toilets
The only toilets on the route are the two cafés at the start and the end of the route.
Hilliness
The route is effectively completely flat. The steepest gradient doesn’t even hit 2%.
Safety from traffic
Except for a very short stint on (normally) very quiet bits of lane, at the start and the end, the route is entirely traffic-free.

Chester itself has a lot to offer, from the city walls (parts of which date back to the Romans), to the Roman amphitheatre, plus a stunning city centre.

There are no barriers on this route. However, there are some lazy chicanes in several places.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any cycle hire operators on, or very near the Chester Millennium Greenway.

This is a great route to take kids on, and even younger kids will enjoy it.
Social safety
Some parts of the route can be a bit isolated, though during high season the entire route would normally be busy.

Getting to the Chester Millennium Greenway
The route as shown on the map starts at the Meadow Lea Farm Coffee Shop, and ends at Yvonne’s Café, in Connah’s Quay. If you’ll be driving, I suggest parking nearer Connah’s Quay, as parking will be easier on that side.
You can get to the Shotton by train, or Chester, for that matter, but in both cases that’d involve some additional cycling on the road.
